What the heck is dry rot?
Dry rot is wood decay caused by fungi that digest wood and therefore reduces its strength and stiffness. Like most fungi, it requires moisture to grow and thrive which means old leaky roofs are a great place for dry rot spores to germinate and grow. It’s commonly found in the West Coast. If dry rot is found on your home, it must be repaired in order to complete your roofing project and receive your building department’s final permit approval.
Typical places to look for dry rot are under eaves, on rafter tails, or fascia. If you see some evidence of dry rot, it’s likely there’s more to be found once the existing roof is torn off.
It’s important to ask contractors how much they charge for dry rot they discover during your project, especially if you suspect there may be dry rot in your home. Contact us today for a free assessment and re-roofing estimate.
